Flowering pear tree – The tree

The flowering pear tree does in some cases resemble a huge bush since branches can grow from a relatively low height above the ground. The tree can become up to 56 feet (17 meters) tall and usually has a distinct long and narrow crown. Most species of the flowering pear tree shed their leaves during the colder season but there is a couple of species in East Asia that are evergreen. All of them is quite hardy when it comes to cold though, with the toughest flowering pear trees withstanding temperatures about -40F (-40C) degrees.

Flowering pear tree – The flowers

The reason for that the flowering pear tree actually blooms is that the flowers needs to be pollinated for it to bear fruit. Usually bees going from flower to flower are the main transporters of pollen and the reason for the pollinating process. The flowers are usually yellowy white tinted with pink and the smell, well, the smell is a whole chapter for itself. Usually described as sensually sweet some others have pinpointed the more exact likeness and that will be described in a whole other chapter.

Flowering pear tree – Cultivated

The fruit of the pear tree is cultivated all over the world but originated from the temperate regions of the Old World. All the way from Western Europe and North Africa and spreading east right across Asia the wild growing flowering pear trees can be found. Today though professional cultivars have large fields where pears more or less are produced. Although not commonly known the pear comes in a variety almost equal to that of apples. The reason for this being so unknown might be the fact that pears usually only is eaten as it is while apples can be used in a large variety of recipes with great result.
